Dec 28 Minnewaska State Park Tuesday Trek: Mosses and Lichens

Join local naturalist Eric Van Deusen for an approximately three-mile long walk along Awosting Falls Carriage Road to Awosting Falls and back. Along the way we'll look for lichens and mosses and learn about their subtle but significant impact here at the Park Preserve.

Pre-registration is required for participation in all public programs. Please call the Park Office at 845-255-0752. For outings, please wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring snacks and water.

Dec 26 Catskill Mountain Railroad's 2010 Winter Holiday Train

Get into the holiday spirit and enjoy a one-hour excursion through the historic City of Kingston! The Holiday Train with Santa Claus on board will depart from Westbrook Lane for a three-mile round trip; heading West across Fair Street, Washington Avenue, to the old C9 Bridge, and then back again. Trains consist of open-air seating as well as limited space inside our refurbished caboose. Please dress appropriately and make sure to bundle up! Have a toy train set-up under your Christmas tree? Well why not bring the kids out to experience the real thing.

Dec 24 Papermaking for Holiday Ornaments at Minnewaska State Park

Join Park Preserve educator Jillian Koehnken to learn the ancient art of papermaking. Using all recycled materials, each participant will make their own piece of original paper to take home. This sample can be used to make a holiday ornament, a personalized card, or anything else you can imagine! This program is recommended for families with children over the age of seven years.

Ashokan artist Robert Selkowitz is hosting Sunday Afternoon Open Houses at his carriage house studio, 3024 Route 28 in Ashokan. Widely known for his distinctive landscape pastels of the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains, and Cape Breton Island, as well as his series of idyllic porch paintings, Selkowitz invites you to view his latest work in his studio. Prices are reduced on original works and many gift worthy items are available under $20, including, books, prints and note cards depicting our beautiful mountain region. Dec 19 Minnewaska State Park Meadows Loop Hike

Join Laura Conner, Environmental Educator, for a leisurely three-mile long stroll on a combination of carriage roads and footpaths. Along the way we'll look for clues to the past uses of the land and participants will be challenged to figure out the mysteries locked in the telltale signs left behind on the landscape.

The Boundless Edge Ice Dance Ensemble will perform dance choreography on ice, set to the music of Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra and J.S. Dec 18 Mohonk Preserve-Owl Pellet Workshop for Families

Grandparents, here's a great opportunity to spend some quality time with the grandkids. Join Gayle Turowski, Mohonk Preserve Volunteer, and bring the whole gang for an exciting hands-on experience! Learn all about owls and then unravel the mystery of what they eat by examining bones and other prey remains. Children ages 7 and up are welcome. Children must always be accompanied by an adult. Dec 17 UPAC's Friday Film Series on the Big Screen Presents 'The Princess Bride'

The Bardavon is pleased to continue the third year of classic movies on the big screen at the Ulster Performing Arts Center (UPAC). The Princess Bride is a 1987 film directed by Rob Reiner, combines comedy, adventure, romance, and fantasy. The story is presented in the movie as a book being read by a grandfather (Peter Falk) to his sick grandson (Fred Savage). This film is number 50 on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies" and number 88 on The American Film Institute's (AFI) "AFI's 100 Years... 100 Passions" listing the 100 greatest film love stories of all time.
