Our Blog: At Home in Ulster

Home Sweet Home

Ulster County is renown for being a magnificent four season outdoor playground. Yet as the weather turns colder, all things home start to take root in my mind and heart.

So while others are making sure their ski gear is in optimal shape, I'm looking forward to domestic projects like reupholstering two oversized chairs in my living room, creating a wall of family pictures and sprucing up my bedroom. Instead of hoping for mountains of powdery snow, I start to collect mountains of fabric and craft supplies, piles of colorful paint chips and a head full of creative ideas.

Since do-it-yourself projects is an addiction for me (and because I've been spending way too much time on Pinterest in the home décor category ogling and reposting), I have to plan carefully lest I tread down a slippery slope of taking on more than I can do. But for now, I'll start making the rounds through my favorite stores looking for purchases to make my house cozier through Hudson Valley winter to come.

  • Home Goods in Kingston for bedding, decorative pillows, picture frames and baskets of all shapes and sizes.
  • True Value Hardware in New Paltz, where owner Louie Benson never fails to supply the perfect tools and tips to successfully get me through changing a wallpapered bedroom to a pale gray blue haven.
  • And because a girl can never have enough kitchenware or bath supplies, Bed, Bath & Beyond is indispensable.

A bottle, or five, of this season's beaujolais nouveau is the only item left on my list of must-haves. Then it's off to my sewing room until about mid-March when the yearning for sun pushes me back outside.
