Holiday Shopping in Ulster

I'm a big supporter of shopping local. Malls have never enticed me. You'll never find me anywhere near a store on Black Friday. I love to ramble down the streets of our local towns, going in and out of all the wonderful shops collecting logoed shopping bags every step of the way.

Gifts of clothing, food, books, chocolates, antiques, home goods, sporting equipment, art and more can all be found on the main streets of Ulster County towns like Woodstock, Saugerties, Kingston, High Falls, and New Paltz.

These independent stores have unique items chosen with care by their owners, giving those who love giving the chance to surprise recipients with something of real joy.

Books - Is there anyone who doesn't like books? I sure hope not. I have quite a few artists in my life and I love the graphic novel section of Inquiring Minds in Saugerties. I love visiting The Golden Notebook in Woodstock. It feels like my living room and has some books that you won't find in the chains. Barner Books in New Paltz is great for finding signed books and beautiful antique books.

Chocolate - Perfect for anyone and everyone, Ulster has so many yummy places, you can feed everyone's palate. One of the newest to Ulster is Lagusta's Luscious, an organic and fare trade local chocolatier based in New Paltz. These chocolates are quite unique in ingredient combinations and very beautiful. At Kokokobi in Kingston, you'll have to try the Ingrid Bergman hand-rolled truffle and the sale caramels. Krause's Chocolates, in Saugerties, is a family-owned store run by a third generation confectioner who uses his grandfather's recipes and hand-dipping techniques to make delicious chocolate treats. Lucky Chocolates also creates handmade, luxurious, small batch chocolates from organic and fair trade chocolate.

Home Goods - For the homebodies in your life, stop in to Cocoon in New Paltz. From kitchenware and babyware to purses and home scents, this store has found the unusual of useful items. High Falls is home to Nectar Imports and High Falls Mercantile. The first has a wonderful array of imports. The latter displays an unusual mix of old world and contemporary living.

Outdoor Living - So many of us live in Ulster County because of the outdoor activities the geography provides. Stores like Rock and Snow in New Paltz and Potter Brothers Ski and Snowboard in Kingston provide lots of choices.

The real advantage to shopping local is being able to meander up and down the holiday-decorated main streets of towns like Woodstock, New Paltz and Saugerties. These towns are at their finest at Holiday times.
New Paltz has a wonderful event called New Paltz Unwrapped, where shopkeepers who've had their windows under wraps reveal their holiday décor. From Water Street Market to Handmade & More, touring these shops while running into friends and neighbors is so wonderful.

Woodstock and Saugerties are also lined with one shop after another, where everything from candles, hats and scarves, and much more can be found. And how can you mention Saugerties without a few words about the antiques! Uptown Kingston has must-visit stores like Bop to Tottom, the Parent Teacher Store and Catskill Art.

Well, I'm off to shop! See you in town.
