Yes, it's September. Summers seem to fly by so fast. It stinks. No - wait a minute, it's not September that stinks, it's the upcoming Hudson Valley Garlic Festival in Saugerties that's filling my senses with the pungent anticipation of tasty things to come. Over 40,000 visitors each year descend upon this picturesque Ulster County town that Budget Travel Magazine has named one of the Top 10 Coolest Small Towns in America!

Hands down, this is one of the best garlic festivals in the nation. Held this year on September 24th & 25th, visitors will find garlic growers, venders, cooks and crafters, both local and national. The aroma of over 60 varieties of garlic, bearing names like Asian Tempest, Purple Glazer, Summit Shock and more fill the air. Venders sell everything from garlic pickles, garlic cheese, and garlic pretzels to garlic gelato and garlic fudge.

As always, this year's festival is bound to bring bad breath to epic proportions so be sure to pack plenty of breath mints. While indulging in all things garlic, visitors will be entertained by renowned chef demonstrations and lectures. Ric Orlando, of New World Home Cooking (2010 Chopped Champion) is a perennial favorite. Arm of the Sea Theater, with their larger than life masks and puppets are performing, as well as musical groups such as Annie & The Hedonists and Captain Squeeze and the Zydeco Moshers. There's even a children's section where kids can participate in their own activites.

Best of all, all of the money raised goes to support the youth of the community.

How can you resist?

Got any Hudson Valley Garlic Festival memories of your own? I'd love to hear them.
