Aaahhhh Spa

It's March and I'm totally done with winter. Unfortunately, winter is not done with me quite yet. When winter weather, career pressures, physical demands and the stress of raising teenage girls take their toll on body and soul, I spend a glorious day at the spa. And no matter where in Ulster County you live, there's a great spa near you.

There's nothing a great massage and facial can't cure. And it's one of the only places where my tendency to constantly multitask melts into total relaxation.
I live in New Paltz, so Mohonk is the place I usually head to.

The spa is the newest addition to Mohonk's offerings and they sure know how to do things right. Swedish massage, Royal Thai massage, herbal poultices, aromatherapy, deep heat compresses, warm stones, reflexology, deep cleansing, guided power napping, and more can be found here. And many of the herbs and exfoliating elements can be found right on the grounds.

What I love best is their outdoor heated mineral pool - especially in the winter. As nuts as that sounds, I just love fixing myself a hot cup of tea, taking the very short path to the bath in the cozy robe they supply, then melting my stress away in the aromatic heat of the tub overlooking snowy evergreens.

The Emerson Resort & Spa is another remarkable Ulster County destination located in the heart of the highest Catskill Mountains. I stayed there for one night about a year ago when I was participating in an Ulster County Chamber of Commerce program and my room was divine. I didn't get to indulge in the spa but I know they offer more than 40 Eastern and Western treatment options, individualizing them to the health, lifestyle and desire of every guest. Sited on the edge of the Esopus Creek, they even have outdoor streamside treatment cabanas - sounds heavenly!

In the western section of the county, you'll find Kerhonkson's Hudson Valley Resort. Here, taking time for yourself includes reiki, shiatsu, and more exotic indulgences such as Seaweed Algae Mud Treatment or Sea Salt Body Polish. If you're fortunate enough to enjoy spa-ing often, Hudson Valley Resort offers a spa membership worthy of consideration.

I know there are other day spas in Ulster County that pamper just as well as the ones I've mentioned here. Let me know your favorites so I can try them too!
